I didn't know elementary schools had a symphony orchestra.

I was in my elementary orchestra. We did two concerts a year. One, towards the beginning of the year, was a spaghetti dinner with live "entertainment". It was mostly an event put on to raise money for instruments, metronomes, sheet music, and such.

The second show took place shortly before Christmas break, and this was a more formal, concert-like performance. I remember playing "Up On The Rooftop" and "Oh Holy Night".

I don't think that the elementary level orchestra is meant to be taken seriously as a performance, but is meant to give parents an opportunity to glow over their darling children trying oh so hard to play the cello or the harp.

It does, of course, also help the kids get accustomed to performing in front of an audience so that when they get on to higher levels of performance and competition they at least know what its like to play in front of people.

I wonder, what instrument did you play? Bass guitar?

did you really? I would have never guessed it. Do you still play?

Oh, and if you like string quartets with style, you should check out the score to The Fountain. It's on Howton's server, but I would be glad to send it anywhere you so desire.

No, I haven't played in 15 yers, but I still hold a special affinity for cellists.

I still kick it to Yoyo Ma's CDs quite a bit.

yannow, I don't have any of his music on my box (and therefore do not own any of his CDs) but everytime the announcer says they're going to play Yoyo Ma on the radio, I get al giddy.
