My family is kind of "odd". As Eric will tell you if you ask him about when I was ranting back in January or so... :-P

We are "serviced" by a company that only serves about 8 families.

It is an old flour mill which has been owned and operated by the same family for the last 100yrs or so. Maybe a bit less give or take.

Back around Christmas, we had some pretty high winds, and those winds caused some wires (old wires I might add) to rub together sending HUMUNGOUS power surges into our house. It turned out that we had to live without power for 5 days, because it was Christmas, and the company didn't want to deal with it.

My Dad has electrician training, so he knows about this stuff, (along with being a top notch mechanic) so he ended up going on and checking stuff out, but the "power company" was stupid so yeeeah.

We went through 12 small surge protector's and 10 large ones. (as big as you can buy from staples for your computers, phones etc... I forget how much voltage it can take, but... it's an un-believable amount.) At one point, our house was on fire because of the power surging into it... the protector fried, and the rug caught on fire.

My 13 yr old brother tried to go in to pull the protector away from the wall/unplug it etc... but couldn't because of the smoke envolved, so my other brother, (15) ran in and grabbed it, smoking and flaming and ran outside with it and threw it in the snow. Coughed for about 20 minutes, and couldn't see for quite awhile after that, but... he saved the house.

It turned out that what was wrong, was the transformer which is out there on the pole had gone bad - and the family who sells us our power didn't want to buy a new one... so my folks offered to buy it... on the condition we didn't have a bill for 4 months.

Since we have an average bill of $300 a month in the summer (lowest time)... they knew if they bought this that they would have paid for it within 4 months.

Winter bill between October and March, specifically Febuary, tops out around $700 a month because we have a lot of rabbits that require heat lamps, the water pumps all have to have heat lamps... etc...

We burn wood, so we don't use electric for heat thankfully, and there are other things we do to cut the bill, but... they have hiked prices and for the time being, we're stuck. We were considering solar power to suppliment what we buy from the mill, and also considering a wind-mill type thing. Not sure what my folks decided on.

Re: Electricity

Well, if you live in Texas, and you have the option to choose your electric service provider, I can give you an excellent rate. This will truly save you significant money on your electric bill.

If you are in Georgia - we are going to be startup up there pretty soon, but it won't be in electricity, it will be in natural gas... which if you use I can give you an excellent rate on that too.

But I don't know where you are... so I'm not sure my company can help you.

But you've got an interesting story! :)
