Week One

Mostly walked around visiting with former co-workers, attending meetings, and getting a feel for things this week. A very comfortable pace, one I haven't experienced in 18 months. Disclosed publicly that I was only interested in eating Mexican food for the first 30-days, and I did that in spades. So much so, that I think I'll just stop eating altogether for a couple of days and process all this already in my system. Monday however, will prove to be quite different, as I'll be racking new servers and running fiber for the new Data Center. Toward the end of the week, I realized that I hadn't quite un-SOE'd (Standard Operating Environment) my laptop, and with the amount of proxy security, etcetera, at this defense contractor...I was in dire straights. Fortunately, we're a unix shop, so my decision to run kubuntu 7.0.4 desktop on my laptop won't impede me in the slightest. Feisty Fawn installed flawlessly, though apparently by disabling my modem in the BIOS, I lost my sound support. Odd, to be sure, but I quickly corrected that then installed VMware Workstation for linux and loaded Windows XP on a 9GB partition with 768MB of RAM just in case. Good times. This also allows me to run Amarok at work and maintain the iPod across two platforms. How very wonderful.

After work each day was a different story altogether. It went from leisurely to frantic, as we've been looking for a place to live between the sale of the house in Saint Louis, and the building of our new home in Princeton, Texas. drax0r and jesskd26 have found a 2100/square foot rent house eight miles North of work in Anna until they conclude (and/or build) their new house. I'm having my P.O.D.S. redirected there to fully unload as opposed to having two entire units in storage. Furthermore, he's already received confirmation of his cable modem installation, and I'll be having our DirecTV set up there as well. We've also made a couple of trips to the subdivision my family will eventually be living in to actually walk-through the houses we've been coveting now for several months. Very nice indeed.

I've been doing a hell of a lot of walking in this job - no longer tied to my desk. Toward the end of the week, however, I began to miss my wife something fierce. And my neighbors. And of course, galinda822. Being with drax0r again though, is incomparable. We're already starting to turn heads at work. Just the way we like it.

Eight hours moving drax0r's crap from his old house to the storage shed. Starting this Friday, we move all contents from the storage shed to the new rent house. I don't know how long that's going to take, but I hope we're done before the P.O.D.S. arrives to unload. We had Chipotle for lunch and later was presented with a half bottle of Glenmorangie 12 'Madeira Wood Finish' for my troubles. Thanks drax0r! We start work at 1000 hours tomorrow. I'm quite sure it will be another full day.

Sounds nice. Back in Texas and lovin' it? I hope things stay this nice for you. :)

Wow, where has my sarcasm gone?

Perhaps you'll get your sarcasm back once drax0r and I settle in? Watch your back!

I'll try, but it's mighty hard to do; I'd have to carry a set of mirrors with me everywhere I go!

And, quite frankly, I think I'll enjoy having people to spar with a bit, again. None of my friends will take it up with me anymore.

I turned my head when I read this. You two are weird.
ehowton at 2007-05-07 01:32 (UTC) (Link)
Perhaps you should join in the festivities instead of alienating yourself?

I intend to, but that precludes that I am clued into the festivities.

That sentence doesn't make any sense. Or was that your way of 'jumping in?'
galinda822 at 2007-05-06 23:12 (UTC) (Link)
You not eat an Mexican food for a couple days? I don't believe it.
Sounds like you're quickly reacclimating yourself to Texas.

I'm very much looking forward to you getting your new house down there. Make sure there's plenty of room for me! :)

Your wife and son miss you too! And of course, so does galinda822!!!!

Our new house seems like a long time away...I'm not even out of my parents house yet. Worked 8-hours today packing up drax0r's old rent house in preparation for the move to the new one. This moving stuff is not going to slow down for a long time. Once he gets the new place, we move everything from storage in Garland to Anna - nearly an hour drive. Then the P.O.D. to unload after my wife ships that - then moving everything to the new house once its built. Maybe next year will be better.

Oh, and there's always room for galinda822!

Well, look at it this way: I can come out and help you guys for a weekend in exchange for free booze and cigars.
ehowton at 2007-05-07 01:52 (UTC) (Link)
Now how could we possibly refuse an offer like that? Its what we do anyway! Oh what fun...

too much, methinks!

Ok dude, you show up sometime after work Friday, and I'll hand you a fistful of cigars right off the bat. You can smoke them back-to-back the entire weekend. drax0r's going to chill a keg of beer for the weekend move, and I'll split the last half of the bottle of Glenmorangie he gave me when its all moved. And you can take that to the bank.

See you Friday dude. Drive safe.

um...I was referring to August. Thanks for the offer though.

I told you it would be at least a year before I saw you again. Looks like I was right. :(

It'll go by with a quickness.

Your eternal optimism as usual! :)

And I'm trying to get kubuntu to see my Novatel USB Broadband modem so I can kick Windows square in the nuts once and for all.

Oh, dude - I've got a cigar with your name on it for SMACKDOWN. Perhaps we'll smoke them on the roof?

Dude! Congrats on your gallery 2 upgrade! Too bad the SMAKDOWN pics aren't on there :(

Have a good night.
