Don't Be an Ass

As each of us toils through our day, everyday, each individual thing we see or do is based upon assumptions.

Our own empirical dataset is inexorably flawed because we interpret our own experiences differently than others may have experienced them, falling again to assumption as we draw from ourselves in previous situations to react to new ones. We take things for granted every moment of our lives and live in a world of assuming the things we see and do will react as we expect them to. This is required to function. Our entire lives are made up of a series of natural deductions. Its how we've made it as far as we have.

Having assumptions is more about things you've experienced rather than new revelations unveiled, and its these situations where you're more likely to err. Those who refuse to 'make assumptions' have already failed insofar as they've just created a paradox by assuming they shouldn't. EVERYTHING is based upon what we, as individuals believe is true, and our reaction to them.

So please, refrain from telling me I'm "making an ass" of myself because I've "assumed" something.

You're just showing your weakness to assert your own dataset of rules, and you reek of ignorance.

Thank you.

Great avatar d00d! I'll have to come out and help you finish those smokes. What I found most amusing (in a good way) was that here I brought two of my favorite cigars (ok, so I've only really found 3 smokes that I like, the other being the Camacho) and both you and photogoot liked them. I mean, you guys are supposed to be the afficinadoes and I the amature and yet I was able to impress you not once but twice. The Davinci's brought me great happieness as you said that they were the most full-bodied smoke you'd ever had.

I need to go buy some smokes, but as I don't have a humidor nor the time to sit back and smoke...just another reason to move to Texas. A job that would be less hours, more pay and time spent sitting on the porch smoking.

I would like to send a mutual friend a Christmas gift, but as I bought the store out, I don't think they'll be in stock until after the holidays. Nevertheless, I presume that you will once again serve as my courier when the time comes. You're a good friend like that.

However, despite your little tirade here (and as pissed as you may be with me) you sir, are an ass. Thankfully, you supress this tendency more often then not.

Thank you for your patience concerning this issue.

I'm glad you like the avatar - it is of course another photogoot original. Interesting though, how different people react differently to things. For example, you were not the subject of today's post. It was brought up in passing, and it dawned on me that my views on it were not written down. That is all.

Very interesting. Anything specific prompt this? It appears some joviality might be due. Perhaps the upcoming weekend can provide some enjoyment.

I thought I would reply with a somewhat related thought, but I think I will make it a post on my LJ instead.
http://wardlejew.livejournal.com/4309.html

Now to the rest of my thoughts.
each individual thing we see or do is based upon assumptions.
What we see is real in fact. How we interpret what we see is based on assumptions, and can even change in our perspective what we think we really saw.

So please, refrain from telling me I'm "making an ass" of myself because I've "assumed" something.

Still, if you choose to make a stupid assumption, I, assuming you could have chosen a better assumption, am going to still call you stupid. =) And please don't assume I'm stupid because I've called you stupid.

You're just showing your weakness to assert your own dataset of rules, and you reek of ignorance.
By telling you what I think, doesn't that mean I'm not to weak to assert my own dataset. Granted, it may be an ignorant set.

Deep thoughts though!

Brilliantly stated sir. And yes, most people do, in my estimation, make retarded assumptions. I am but one man; how can I make a difference?

I wonder how many people thought you were referring to them? To take such a hard stand, a positive "know it all" certainly doesn't help your own self image. You are who you are, O great and mighty wise one.

Dear Sir, May I comment on you situation?

... assuming the things we see and do will react as we expect them to. This is required to function. Our entire lives are made up of a series of natural deductions. Its how we've made it as far as we have.

We can assume the sun in going to come up, that we will have running water and electricity, and we can assume our fellow man will treat us with dignity and respect as we strive to do the same but can human nature and reaction to situations in life be assumed, that is taken for granted? Are not most reactions such as BS, sarcasm, and being an ass a learned behavior? I believe so. Is it used as a coping device or to get ahead in life? Just ignorance? Who knows the human heart?
I can see from your blog Sir that you are a strong man with principles. You appear to be a true friend and well respected of those that know you. And as a man with principles live your life on more than assumption. Think wiser, higher for when the soul hates an entity, such as assholes, as you do, you will rise above it. You already recognize it! Play smarter.

I admire you blog and the diversity of you interest . Good luck.

Diving in late...

Hey, it's my first ever post as a livejournal member. But please don't expect me to become a geek like you... And for the record, I refuse to identify myself when you see me in person by any screen name or wacked out online alter ego.

FYI: I don't know the rules regarding posting entries on blogs, I don't live in the blog world, so fill me in if I am totally screwing something up. I don't want to make an ass of myself in the manifesto, but I probably will (even in my first entry). So I have to lay down a couple of interpretive guidelines so that it doesn't happen more often than necessary. Not so much for you, Eric, but for those reading this who have no idea who I am or may be shocked by how strangely out of place I appear when I jump into the world of Eric Howton. While many things I post may have serious content, I am always jovial when posting. I refuse to post angry. If I'm pissed, I'll call you. :) I don't want to have to place a happy face after all my serious statements just to avoid emotional assumptions and misinterpretations. I will speak freely here and not worry that feelings could get hurt. Rebuke me if necessary, I can take it.

Regarding the ass post. Giggling or not, you will have to face reality sometime... And yes, your dataset is flawed.

Having the small and non-omnipotent brain that I do, I have to assume that, contrary to your dataset assertion (I really like that term), "everything" is not based upon what we believe to be true. I don't want to piss off all the post modern mindset devotees, but reality would be the exception to your "everything" dataset rule you tried to assert. Truth is truth regardless of what "a priori" assumptions you bring to the table when interpreting whether to believe it or how to respond to it.

Another one for the record. I have never known you to make an ass of yourself, because it is not possible to make an ass of an ass (assuming of course that the ass in question is a complete ass and not just a partial one). An ass is already an ass and cannot become more ass-like. Having said that, I would like to take this opportunity to assume (based on my experience AND revelations) that you made an ass of yourself long before you assumed anything. But unlike some asses I know, you're a lovable ass, so I will continue to swap dataset assertions with you.

I am asserting my dataset jovially. Deal with it.
