I didn't know Giacchino was doing the score - which just like you, I'm both thrilled and nervous, for the reasons you mentioned above. I have to say that Speed Racer is on heavy rotation; enjoying it only after having seen the movie. But I can't imagine him not including the origial theme, as he's proven quiet adept at incorporating them into his own material. But you're right - its just not a Star Trek movie without it.

The original uniforms was the first thing that caught my eye - did you see the girl in the short dress??? Just awesome. I don't know exactly what it was about these pictures that led me to sit up and notice, but perhaps you're right in that casting had a part to play. It just looks like they're on the right track.

I hope so. Like you, I've found the last few films to be rather lackluster, with Nemesis being particularly offensive. In fact, I'd have completely forgotten they existed if they didn't have Jerry scores.

Giacchino has done the music for all of Abrams' stuff, so he was a shoo-in for this. I hope that he does model his approach with the original series in mind (Sol Kaplan's music for the episode "The Doomsday Machine" is as good a space opera score as any), and not the boring washes of sound that characterized most of the spin-off series.
