Systems, like collective bargaining, work well during relatively "normal" times. They are not meant to handle extremes like the long, drawn out recession the country is suffering now.

Most people expect systems to be perfect. When they fail to perform under certain circumstances, the knee-jerk is to toss them out altogether.

Frankly, I think all parties are acting in bad faith here.

The unions need to grow up. Surely, they can do the math and realize that states are not collecting the tax dollars that they do when the economy is running well. They need to take that into account, be flexible, and suck it up like everybody else.

That said, I view dismantling collective bargaining not just as a way to deal with the recession, but as an unabashed power grab. They have no intention of reinstating it when the economy is again on its feet. We have would-be Robber Barons among us.

Then again, that's all politics all the time and nothing new.
