DirecTV came out to hook up 4 rooms. I got home and asked my wife, "Where's our DVR?" That was the wrong question to ask. I got reamed for not being available during the technical installations. So I called DirecTV this morning, asking about my DVR.
"You didn't order one." They told me.
"Perhaps." I said. I explained using their online ordering tool, and they showed up, but the DVR didn't.
"You didn't order one." I was told again. Grrrrr. Ok.
"Let's pretend that I did, and get this resolved." I suggested.
"No problem. That will be $99 for the installation."
"The installation is supposed to be free."
"It was. This is new business. All new installs after the initial incurs a charge."
"IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN INSTALLED WITH THE REST OF THE EQUIPMENT!"
"You didn't order a DVR. This is new business."
"How much is the disconnect fee if I terminate my contract with you?"
"There's no charge during the first seven days, but you'll have to return your receivers."
"No problem, they'll just install new ones when I re-order with the DVR."
"You've been very reasonable sir, and we appreciate that. I'm going to go ahead and waive the installation fee."
"Fantastic, thank you."
"No problem sir, there will be a $100 charge for the unit, which you would have paid anyway."
"I thought it was free?"
"It is. With a $100 mail-in rebate you should get in six to eight weeks."
"Fine. Please proceed with the order."
"Thanks. Do you need my credit card information for the $100 charge?"
"No sir, I was able to apply an instant rebate."
I went from owing $200 immediately to owing nothing. The art of negotiation...
