Serving Minecraft

Its been a very interesting week. I've been on call, which isn't so unusual, but my son choosing to play with me, rather than his friends, is. Working from home affords me exactly these types of opportunities, getting six or seven hours of work in each day before he even awakes what given summer vacation and all - which is waning - they have only 20 days left here in the Sunflower State.

He's been pushing me kinda hard to play Minecraft with him - something I didn't think I was interested in. Until I found I was focusing on all the wrong things. So I logged in on his sister's account and we played for two days straight - in between the after-hours work generated sametime's, text messages, and phone calls. Had I not relented I may never have seen in action his enthusiasm and creativity - well worth the €19 Euro for my own account - seeing this side of him.

I even relegated myself to the downstairs computer to play adjacent him. As much fun as it was watching him play, it was equally fulfilling knowing how much he enjoyed my playing with him - because he mentioned it several times. Being me of course, I couldn't help myself from tinkering with things just a bit, so I dusted off a couple of Xeon servers - one I loaded with Ubuntu 13.04 server and the other already had Win7 on it - and started running our own private instances. Pretty soon, I installed ESXi on the beefier one so we could flush it with individualized games. He was pretty geeked out too :)

Its times like these - the long summers - that I hope he looks back upon with much joy. I know I will, but this is the kind of stuff that will shape who he becomes.

That's cool! The number one son started playing that a couple of months ago. When he saw this post looking over my shoulder he asked me to request your server address so he might join in the fun.

I'm toward the end of setting up an Adventure mode server on an openSUSE vps in Germany.

We drove right by Newton,KS on our way back to Washington last week. We had been back in Texas because Becky's mom passed away. I had no clue that we would be going right by you or I would have called and tried to arrange coming by to see you!

lol, if it had been just me I probably would have just showed up (don't have his address though). It was me and my whole family though so I didn't attempt it!

I want to be clear here - had you woke me at 0300 in the morning with not only your entire family but your extended family in tow, I would have directed you here, manifested a meal for everyone, and put you up for as many days as you cared to stay.

Sorry I missed you :(

HAPPY TRAVELS!

Oh, I KNOW you would have welcomed us with open arms and been completely happy about it. I never thought you would be upset or mad or anything. It would have bothered ME to just show up that way!

Oh, his address is always easy to find. I had his new address in Anna barely minutes after he signed his title paperwork for the house before he could tell what it was.

what fun! both A* and W* play this now...it's their first "real" computer game. i haven't gotten into it yet....can you explain to me the point exactly? is it just to build things?

That was my struggle as well at first. What's the point? Once I absorbed the sheer...freedom of the game without such constraints, it was really quite exhilarating. I suppose discovery is the focus of the game. Exploration and creativity.

There are basically two gameplay modes; create or survive. Both are fun, survival is more challenging, but also more rewarding. Once you are absorbed into the environment, nuanced test/results become consuming. I've actually had a lot of fun!

Ok, so I will dive in for a couple of hours and see how it goes. Thanks for the insight...my kids can't stop talking about this game so I figure I might as well try to get into it!
