It would make sense that we're only able to apply that of which we are aware. While familiar with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs for example, I wasn't aware I was already living as self-actualized until it was presented to me as being evident - I wasn't aware of what it looked like; encompassed. And while I only had an anecdotal understanding of Stoicism, it wasn't until I took one of those goofy online tests, What Philosophical School of Thought are you in? that I understood Stoicism to be a complete ideology, let alone one I had been operating under the last several years or so.
Why Stoicism? Because I believe - no, that's not good enough, plenty of crazy people believe plenty of crazy things - because I have proven to myself time and time again that throwing my hands in the air and running around in circles screaming never adequately solved any problems. Stoics practice physical and mental self-control to find inner-peace and strength for a happier life. In looking into this, I found several assertions which pointed to the varying degrees of how of suffering was handled as the main differences bewteen Stoicism, Existentialism, Hedonism, Epicureanism, and Buddhism. As a fan of all of those, I admit I find it far easier to reframe a a bad situation to make the best of it rather than any of the other philosophical suggestions.
