I estimate there are approximately 5 million articles written about Microsoft networking. None of which discuss why "DNS server isn't responding" is a completely bullshit summation, nor why only a system restore can ever fix it. Surely someone, somewhere (other than me) has to be completely fed up with this nonsense.

Flush dns? Can you talk to DNS with telnet? Packet sniff if neither of those work.

Flush DNS almost never helps because DNS is almost never the problem. I couldn't even ping the gateway - by IP. Yet Windows still thought the reason I couldn't ping the gateway IP was because DNS wasn't responding. Its all cray-cray.

It mildly occurs to me now that your post might be anecdote and that you have already solved your problem... yeah Windows isn't the best at self diagnosis.

It really wasn't meant to be anecdotal, though yes, it is now working. I wouldn't go so far to say the problem is solved, because it shouldn't have happened in the first place, and there is no fix that I am aware of. I suppose I just get frustrated.
