I lost interest in Besson's work somewhere after Leon (The Professional). However, I count La Femme Nikita to be head, shoulders, torso and legs above anything he's made since. This is a film that perfectly balances genre, character, humor, plot and suspense. The performances are first-rate, the use of the 2.40:1 frame is the best there is, and everything that I've seen Besson done before or since had never quite captured me the same way that this film does. In fact, it is one of the few films I can show to friends in its original French with subtitles without hearing people bitch about having to "read the film."
